Human Rights, Technology, and Governance during COVID-19: A Conversation with Hon. Samantha Power

American Geographical Society

The American Geographical Society and its EthicalGEO Initiative’s Location Tech Task Force has been convening a series of Blue-Ribbon Panels and Leadership Spotlights examining the ethical implications of mobile location technology in the era of COVID-19 and beyond. Ambassador Samantha Power, a noted champion for human rights, discussed her views on how various location technologies—used to fight COVID-19—could have negative consequences for human rights. In a wide-ranging conversation, Ambassador Power’s experience as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Member of the National Security Council formed the basis for her views on the implications of new technologies for democratic governance and the rights of vulnerable groups.
